US Renewables Update
After signing the Prairie Solar virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) in collaboration with Teradyne and Wayfair in 2024, Akamai recently signed an expansion to further increase capacity. This VPPA supports the development of new renewable energy in Champaign County, Illinois, within the carbon-intensive grid of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) North region.
This partnership reflects our emissions-first approach, which prioritizes reducing emissions in the regions that need it most. We expanded our 30 MW portion of Prairie Solar to a 45 MW share of the project. Our portion of Prairie Solar is projected to generate approximately 77,000 MWh annually and is expected to abate an estimated 48,000 metric tons of CO2e annually. Prairie Solar will benefit the environment, support job creation, and reduce the emissions impact on the local community, while adding significant renewable power to Akamai’s U.S. portfolio.
This project exemplifies Akamai’s goal of driving meaningful climate action and supporting a decarbonized future through targeted, impactful renewable energy investments.
With the addition of the Prairie Solar project, our portfolio is spread across regional transmission organization (RTO) regions in the U.S., including ERCOT, PJM, and MISO. We are also continuing to explore opportunities to grow in PJM while expanding into CAISO. This will allow us to generate clean energy in the same regions where our consumption is expected to increase. This expansion also creates geographic diversification to hedge against price volatility risk in the U.S. Midwest.
Global Renewable Energy Expansion
Akamai continues to focus on identifying opportunities to expand our renewable energy program globally, aligning with our dedication to bring net-new renewable energy to the regions where we operate. Through engagement with developers, market research, and targeted initiatives, we recently explored ways to advance renewable energy adoption across key markets, including Germany, Japan, Singapore, Australia, and India.
Signing VPPAs in Germany
We recently executed our first and second virtual power purchase agreements in Europe, which will generate a projected 95,000 MWh of electricity and reduce emissions impact by an estimated 81,000 MT CO2e/MWh on an annual basis. In addition, we are actively pursuing additional opportunities in several European AIB-member countries and the UK.
Exploring Opportunities in Japan, Singapore, and Australia
Our efforts to support the development of new renewable energy projects expanded beyond North America and Europe as we recently began negotiations with developers in multiple countries in Asia and in Australia. We are actively pursuing opportunities to invest in wind and solar projects across Japan, Singapore, and Australia, which provide additionality and proximity to locations where we consume energy.
Identifying Pathways in India and Latin America
We are working with developers in India to identify pathways for Akamai to support its local energy load with renewables. We also considered expansion into several Latin American countries like Brazil and Mexico. In preparation for meeting our 2030 goal of using 100% renewable energy, we began our exploration to thoughtfully align with local climate priorities and governing structures.

As we look to the future, Akamai is focused on transforming opportunities into impactful action to expand our renewable energy footprint. By prioritizing high-carbon-intensity regions and collaborating with local stakeholders, we aim to drive meaningful progress toward our sustainability goals.
Renewable Colocation Partnerships
We work closely with our data center partners, which share our environmental concerns, to ensure that our operations are powered solely by renewable energy sources. Around 98% of our network deployments are in facilities licensed or leased from our colocation partners, which have demonstrated a strong alignment to renewable energy. Our joint efforts have positively impacted the environment, and we continue to prioritize sustainability as a key objective in our operations.
